Even in Kuta Beach and the area around it alone there are places for difficult surfs. It's best to talk to the locals so you won't get into trouble.

Uluwatu

On the southern tip of Bali, Uluwatu is also high on a surfer's destination list. The road to the beach is pretty well-hidden, off the road to the temple of Uluwatu (which in itself is an amazing three-court temple on top of a few hundred feet cliff). You can't reach it by car - rent a motorcycle or walk for about two miles to get there. The site is very popular among serious surfers.

Nusa Dua.

On the south-eastern tip of the island, the Nusa Dua peninsula has some nice reef that provides good waves for surfing. You can stay on any of the most sumptuous hotels in the world spread around the area, and surfing is readily available within walking distance, from a beginner's level to a challenging one for the serious surfers.

Jakarta: From Village to Metropolis

Jakarta, the capital of the nation, has a fascinating history. Lots of different aspects have colored the city history and the life of people today. Since the fifth century, ships from China and Champa (Vietnam), and from all islands in the archipelago docked at the mouth of the Ciliwung river. Indian and Portuguese traders also visited this small town. Javanese sailors, carrying spices from Molucca, also docked there. Nearly all people from the East and West left their trails to blend special flavor of Jakarta.

Concised description of old historical buildings and monuments refers to the site where the city of Jakarta itself begins. All historical evidence points to the area of the Kota, the old city on the banks of Ciliwung river. A bit south of the place currently known as Pasar Ikan or Fish Market was planted the first tiny seed that developed into a huge city of more than 10 million inhabitants. When did Jakarta start its journey throughout history? Nobody knows exactly!

Wayang remains alive and well in Jakarta

The cultures of Central Java, the source of art, music and dance, remains prevalent in Jakarta, representing much of what little most outsiders know of Indonesia. An important example of Javanese culture is the highly stylized wayang. This traditional puppet theater is based on the Hindu Ramayana and Mahabarata epics, combined with themes from Javanese folklore. Wayang is used to teach morals as well as to entertain, and is seen as a highly influential popular art form for spreading morality and social criticism.

Many politicians and successful businessmen are seen as dalang, the skilled men who control the puppets in wayang performances. Life in Indonesia has a way of working much like the plots of all-night wayang performances - slowly and with many unpredictable twists and turns.


Essential to a wayang performance is the gamelan orchestra, a set of bronze gongs and other percussion instruments including a xylophone, a type of two stringed violin and a flute or two. It may take some getting used to but, the sound of the gamelan, in both its Javanese and Balinese forms, has been compared to "liquid moonlight".


Wayang Orang (Dance Drama)
The stories of the Javanese Wayang Wong or Wayang Orang dance drama usually relate episodes of the Mahabarata and Ramayana Hindu Epics.


The Bharata Theater performs the Wayang Wong dance drama every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening. The performances start at 8.15 p.m. and last till about midnight.

Betawi: Jakarta’s Indigenous People

Indonesia's cultural diversity is celebrated in the national motto, Bhineka Tunggal Ika, meaning "Unity in Diversity." One manifestation of this tenet of Indonesian national identity is the government's efforts to give equal precedence to the development of traditional art forms from each ethnic group. In Jakarta, the Orang Betawi - the natives of the city - are considered to be the hosts of these cultures, having emerged from the melting pot of races, ethnic groups and cultures of Indonesia in the 19th century. Today they constitute one of the city's main ethnic groups along side the Javanese (from Central and Eastern Java), Sundanese (from West Java) and Chinese.

Betawi culture is a treasure trove of color, tradition, song, dance, clothing, cuisine, language and dialect. The culture thrives today due to government policy to enhance the cultural identity of the original inhabitants of the city, and prevent their traditions being buried beneath a tide of modernization. There are annual parades and other celebrations in which three-meter tall Betawi mascots (ondel ondel) - are seen delighting the crowds with their large masks and tinsel-sprinkled headdresses.


The language of the Betawi has been adopted by the fashionable younger generation of Jakartans from all ethnic origins, whereas the more formal Betawi Malay is only spoken by the more conservative older generation Orang Betawi.

Geographical Side of Jakarta

Thousands years ago Jakarta was created from mud sediment from rivers crossing this area heading into a gulf. The sediment hardened, forming a furrow of stable land, or delta, shaped like a Chinese wood-fan. It was this area of land which evolved into the busy 14th and 15th century harbor called Sunda Kelapa. On June 22nd, 1527, Fatahillah (an Indonesian Prince who took over this area from the Dutch) changed the name from Sunda Kelapa to Jayakarta. From then on, this date has been commemorated as Jakarta's birthday.


Jakarta lies on the northwestern coast of Java, from latitude 6' to 7' south and 107' to 108' east. In terms of size, Jakarta covers a land area of 650.40 sq. km., constituting 0,03 % of Indonesia's total land area. It has a population of over 9 million.


For administrative purposes, Jakarta is divided into 5 jurisdictions: Central Jakarta (54.89 sq. km.), West Jakarta (131.41 sq. km.), North Jakarta (136.96 sq. km.), East Jakarta (182.01 sq. km.), and South Jakarta (145.13 sq. km.).

Getting to Jakarta

Unless you are Wisnu and happen to have the mighty Garuda at your disposal (its modern version can be a Lear Jet or a Gulfstream), chances are you will need the service of airlines to reach Jakarta from your hometown. But don't worry; Jakarta is an international gateway for Indonesia. Practically all international airlines stop in Jakarta.

From within Indonesia, there are several airlines that serve the domestic markets: Garuda, Merpati, and Bouraq. If you prefer the romance of the ocean, passenger ships connect several cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta. From Medan, for example, you can take the Kambuna; it stops in Jakarta on its way to Surabaya and to Ujung Pandang.

Or if you prefer to reach Jakarta by land, you can easily do it from Sumatera or from Java and Bali. From Medan, North Sumatera, for example, you can take either ALS, Liberty, or other buses, and it'll take you about three days to reach Jakarta. On the road, you will see a lot of Sumatera. Similarly with Java; you can take a Lorena or Karina bus to travel to Jakarta from Bali, from Surabaya, and from many other cities in Java. From some cities in Java, you can travel to Jakarta by train. You can take the Parahyangan from/to Bandung, the Bima from/to Surabaya, and the Senja from/to Yogyakarta, and all the cities in between.

Getting around Jakarta

Taxis
Jakarta taxis are more colorful than the bright yellow cabs of Manhattan; they come in such a great variety and can become a source of confusion. You'll be surprised with all colorful taxis swarming in this city? There are regular taxis and also exclusive ones for those who seek convenience. If your standard of luxury equals to Holywood movie stars, a limousine service is ready for you. The limos feature a range of standard and luxury cars. They are the latest models of Japanese and European luxury cars. Stretch limousines are also available with or without driver. If you have no objection to splurging money, this is the best means of transportation you can use.

Buses
Buses are the primary means of public transportation in Jakarta. Big Mercedes Benzes span the metropolitan Jakarta, taking you from one main hub to another way across town, while spewing toxic through their tail pipes. On some, the PATAS, you would actually be able to enjoy the comfort of air-condition and a high probability of getting a seat. On the regular DAMRI, consider yourself lucky if you can get a seat. When you do, remember to get up and inch towards the exit amidst the sea of people at least 5 minutes before your stop. Fare does not depend on distance.

JAKARTA is a city of some ten million inhabitants. Like many other major Asian capitals, Jakarta is a polyglot of ethnic groups that all contribute to making up the city's collective culture. The history and culture of Jakarta has many elements of India, Arabia, other parts of Asia, and the colonial powers of Europe, interwined with its own.

Jakarta has more than its share of diverse ethnic influences as it is also the capital of a nation with over 17,000 islands and 300 cultural groups, many of which speak their own language as well as the national language, Bahasa Indonesia.

As the prime gateway to Indonesia, Jakarta offers the culture of various regions and groups in the archipelago, in line with the national motto "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" or Unity in Diversity.

The city's dominant populations come from the surroundings areas of Java, many parts of Sumatra, Bali, and Sulawesi. Also making themselves known area those hailing from Irian Jaya, Indonesia's most eastern province, and Kalimantan, home of the Dayak and one of the largest rainforest in the world. Over the centuries, these groups have kept their cultural roots, yet some have also intermixed, including with non-Indonesians, to form a special group in their own known as Orang Betawi.

Above all its mix of races and cultures probably still the most dominant in Jakarta is that of central Java, the source of art, music and dance - albeit Indian influenced - that represents much of what little most outsiders know of Indonesia. An important example is the highly stylized wayang.

Seminyak Bali

Seminyak, Bali’s fascinating resort

The southern part of Bali is the tourism end of the island. Most of the package-tour hotels are found in this area, offering enjoyable places to reside, eat, drink and relax. Undoubtedly, Seminyak with its natural and cultural appeal as well as excellent facilities is one of Bali’s top tourist resorts.

Seminyak is a village situated in the south coast of Bali. Today, a great number of foreigners seen residing in the area that has become the center of Indonesian handicraft business. Also situated in the northern of Legian, Seminyak retains a small town atmosphere, with good traffic condition and no hawkers around. The beach is scruffy in parts and it is isolated from the “action” in Kuta. Besides, Seminyak is a Balinese village, which is still deeply rooted in its old traditions while probably having the highest per capita population of personal computers on Bali and in all indonesia.
Seminyak offers hundreds of places to stay and too many to list down. For archaeological remains enthusiasts, there is a general temple named Pura Peti Tenget. The temple is located on the beach facing the ocean. This temple was built around 16th century ago by the holy priest named Dang Hyang Nirartha from Java when he came to Bali for his holy journey along the west coast of Bali.

Both foreign and domestic tourists are seen visiting the temple everyday. The temple will look much livelier, especially when Hindu followers in Bali celebrate the temple anniversary, locally known as Odalan. Several members of the meditation associations are sometimes seen coming for meditation purposes, whether around the temple area or on the beach nearby

Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Penida (Penida Island) is a small group of islands located in southeast of Bali island. The largest island is Nusa Penida and the other is Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Nusa Penida/Lembongan is widely known for their famous diving sites. They are Penida Bay, Manta Point, Batu Meling, Batu Lumbung, Batu Abah, Toyapakeh and Malibu Point. The flow through the Lombok Straits, general, south-tending, and highly influenced by the monsoon seasons.

The Island inhabitants' main occupation is fishing and seaweed farming. The islands is favorable for holiday resort for the blissful of the placid sea, for water activities throughout the day in floating pontoon like the Bali Hai Cruises, Waka Nusa, Bounty Cruise and SailSensation.

Nusa Penida/Lembongan is a renowned diving site with immense spread of coral reefs and clear vision. Big fishes are frequently observed at the area. Manta rays or sunfishes appear in the certain season. The site is also known of the very strong currents requiring divers some skills.

Lovina

in the western part of Singaraja, long stretch of black sand beach encompasses Anturan, Tukad Mungga, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem and Temukus villages collectively called Lovina.

What is now known as Lovina beach is actually consists of 6 villages along the beach of west Singaraja City. Each village has the farming area adjacent to each other up to the beach. Lovina has black sand beach calm sea and shallow plain sea bed. In the past the area was a cooling machine stop for those traffic from Gilimanuk port to Singaraja or further east. Before 1945 Singaraja was the capital city of East Nusa Tenggara including Bali, but later, after Nusa Tenggara divided into 3 provinces which brought Bali an independence province the capital city of Bali moved to South Bali, to Denpasar city. The character as the remains of past glory of Singaraja is still kept such as the name of Educational City.

At the beginning Lovina beach is popular place for Balinese nation wide known litterair and novelist Mr. I Gusti Pandji Tisna. As a tourist resort Lovina develops much later than south Bali. Three basic activities hat have always triggered the development of Lovina to be a " station balneare " those are Menjangan diving site, Bali round trip program overnight, and a need to more rural resorts. Even the development of Lovina has given more inspiration to the areas further west such as Pemuteran and Labuhan Lalang, a place of 40 minutes drive from Lovina and closer to Menjangan island.

To give the tourists more attraction local people created some activities such as snorkeling, dolphin watching, outrigger paddling, and nature trekking. Recently the Association of Small Hotel and Restaurant in Singaraja put a regular traditional art festival which was planned to be in show annually.

Lovina is for those who like still waters (no surf) and are not fussy about the colour of the beach. Visitors may even encounter some local dolphins. Many cheap losmens are available right on the beach.

Lining up of busy losmen and hotels with the depleted shady sea makes Lovina one of the most stirring beaches in Bali.

Tranquility, incredible under water world and dolphins are the magnetism of Lovina. From Lovina, visiting Pulau Menjangan, which is a part of West Bali National Park will be interesting for diving lover

The movements are elegant and mystic and find their origin in a long and distand past.

Batik

We saw quite a lot of the local handicrafts while in Yogya including a Batik factory and a silver factory.

Batik designs are made by covering parts of the fabric in wax to prevent dyeing-the wax is then melted and the previously dyed parts are then covered in wax so the next dyeing stage can take place.

Sounds complicated-but interesting to watch and even have ago.

Discover the World's Largest Buddhist Temple!

If you have not seen this with your own eyes, you haven't been to Yogyakarta!

The Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is believed to be the world's largest buddist temple located at the Borobudur District. It was built by Sanmaratungga in the 8th century and belongs to Buddha Mahayana. Believe me or not, Borobudur Temple was revealed by our very own Singapore founder, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, in 1814! Wow! All Singaporeans, you must visit this place discovered by our very own founder!!!

In total, there are 10 floors, with the top floor known as the "Nirvana". To reach there, you need to climb 1,000 steps. To me, it's like climbing 2,000 steps as each step is twice the height of the step in Singapore!!! *grin*

Also, it was believed that if you can reach into a particular stupa with the buddha, (for guys, you need to touch the hand and the ladies, you need to touch the foot), all your wishes will come true. So, that particular stupa is located on the east wind of the temple on the 10th floor! Check with the locals and they are able to tell you! Have fun!

Discover the Ancient Story at Prambanan Temple

Prambanan Temple was badly affected during the earthquake this year , May 2006. Currently, the site is closed and restoration would take some time for this beautiful ancient site. Let's hope that the restoration will be completed soon and it's glory will be restored again!

Prambanan temple is located some 17km from the city of Yogyakarta. Tourist can't miss this site as it is only a hundred metre off the main street.

It was said that the hindu temple is built in the 9th century, consisting three courtyards. Sadly, many years back, some parts of the temple is destroyed during a volcano eruption. Nevertheless, this is a site to visit during your stay in Yogyakarta.

Do note that the entrance fee for tourist is different from local. The entrance fee is USD10 (if I see the signage correctly! *grin*). Surrounding the temple is a very large and beautiful garden.

Also, you decide to do solo, there are local guides who would be able to explain to you what each statue or shrine mean for a small token
